When I first got interested in having a gun for protection at home my research pointed to the Shotgun as a good all around choice. Although there is something to be said for the sound of racking a round into the chamber of a Remington 870 12 Gauge, and the unmatched knock down power, the shotgun is not the easiest weapon to maneuver through rooms, halls, and stairways.
After gaining some experience with guns I have now changed my choice of Best Weapon for Home Defense to a large caliber, high capacity handgun.
The Glock 17 owns the title as the most popular home defense gun. It is the first handgun I ever owned for good reason. It has a great reputation for reliability, it is used by more law enforcement and military organizations worldwide than any other, and that is why I chose it.
However, experience is a good thing and as my interest in guns increased so did my knowledge. One requirement that a home defense weapon doesn’t have to meet is conceal ability. The G17 is a large full size handgun with high magazine capacity. It is excellent for use as a service side arm or for home protection where conceal ability is not an issue.
The only way to improve on the full size Glock 9mm is to replace it with another Glock of larger caliber. When it comes to choosing the best self defense weapons, bigger holes are always better. That is why I use the Glock 21SF as my Home Defense Weapon of choice. It provides 13 plus 1 rounds of 45 ACP in a package that is just slightly wider than a Glock 17.
Now don’t get me wrong. I own a 12 GA Remington 870 with extended magazine , and a 9mm Glock 17 with Veridian green laser. But when I am at home at night and hear a strange sound that I want to investigate I grab my Glock 21SF equipped with Big Dot sights, loaded with 14 rounds of 45 ACP JHP, and a high power flashlight. Easy to maneuver, accurate, comfortable to shoot, and makes big holes. I think my G21 high capacity firearm is best for home defense. What’s not to like?
